About this episode

Under the night stars, Mimi asks where the stars came from, and Lumi opens their glowing storybook. Day by day, she tells how God made the light, the sky, the land and the trees, the sun, moon and stars, the fish and birds, the animals and people, and how on the seventh day God rested. A gentle, faithful retelling of Genesis 1:1–2:3 for toddlers and preschoolers, with lots of chances to join in.

What children learn

  • God made everything: the light, the sky, the land and the plants, the sun, moon and stars, the fish and birds, and all the animals.
  • God made people in His own image, to know Him and love Him. He made you, too.
  • Everything God made was very good. On the seventh day God rested and made it a special day.

Join in while you watch

Creation is made for little voices. Watch together and pause if you need to, so your child can answer before Mimi does.

  1. Finish the line. After each day, Lumi says “And God saw that it was…” and stops. Shout “Good!” with Mimi. It comes back on days three, four, five and six, and on day six it’s “very, very good!”
  2. What comes next? Lumi asks which day comes next. Say “Day two!” and keep counting the days as the story goes on.
  3. The quiz. “Do you remember what God made on the very first day?” Let your little one answer first. (Light!)
  4. Fill in the gap. “God made the sun, and the moon, and the…” There’s a pause for your child to say “Stars!”
  5. Count the days. Hold up a finger for each day, one to six, with Mimi and Lumi. And on day seven? God rested!
  6. Pray together. Whisper Mimi’s goodnight prayer with her: “Thank you, God, for making everything.”
  7. The memory verse. Say it together: “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.” Genesis 1:31.

The Bible passage

Genesis 1:1–2:3 (selected verses) 15 verses · King James Version Read the passageHide the passage

1:1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

1:2And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

1:3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

1:5And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

1:7And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

1:9And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

1:11And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

1:16And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

1:21And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

1:25And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

1:27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

1:28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

1:31And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

2:2And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

2:3And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

King James Version (Authorized Version)

Talk about it together

  1. What did God make on the very first day? Can you remember what He made on day four?
  2. Mimi said “Sheep! Like me!” Which animal that God made do you like best?
  3. God made the whole wide world, and He made you too. What would you like to thank God for?

Try this

Make a “seven days” picture together. Fold a big sheet of paper into seven spaces and draw one day in each: light, the sky, land and trees, the sun, moon and stars, fish and birds, animals and people, and a cosy bed for the day God rested. Then count the days on your fingers, one to seven, like Mimi and Lumi.

A little prayer

Dear God, thank you for making the whole wide world, the stars, the animals and the flowers. And thank you for making me. Amen.

Notes for parents and teachers

  • Mimi and Lumi are our storyteller friends; they aren’t in the Bible. Lumi tells the story to Mimi from their storybook in simple words, keeping to what God made on each day and the order He made it in (Genesis 1:1–2:3).
  • God is never pictured. We hear His words while the world changes, and “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3) is quoted just as the Bible says it.
  • Lumi says God knows every star by name and keeps each one where He put it. That comes from Psalm 147:4 (“He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names”) and Isaiah 40:26.
  • Just as in Genesis, light comes on day one and the sun, moon and stars on day four, so when Mimi asks “Where’s the sun?”, Lumi says “Not yet!” And as in Genesis, day two has no “God saw that it was good”.
  • “And God created great whales” (Genesis 1:21), so our sea on day five has a great big whale.
  • We explain “in His own image” (Genesis 1:27) simply as “made to know Him and love Him”, and God’s blessing, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth” (Genesis 1:28), as “Have lots of children, and take care of My world.” The man and the woman are shown gently, from the shoulders up, among tall leaves and flowers.
  • When Mimi asks if God was sleepy, Lumi says God never gets sleepy or tired (Isaiah 40:28; Psalm 121:4). God rested because His work was finished (Genesis 2:2).
  • The questions in the story, the quiz at the end and Mimi’s goodnight prayer are our own additions, to help little ones join in and remember the story.
